| During
the late 1920s, Ralph Peer and the Victor Recording Company were in the
city of Bristol looking for new talent when they stumbled upon l Jimmie
Rodgers and the Carter Family who would become legends of country
music.
However, other amazing musicians were unable to make the trip to Bristol for the auditions because of work and family obligations.

The
music and talent of the Blue Ridge Plateau was revealed by others who
later came in to make records of the old time music.
People here weren't making music to become famous because music
came as natural as breathing. It
was the fabric of life in this rural environment. After neighbors worked
together on their farms, they would make music and dance well into the
night. In the winter, when
crops had been gathered in, they would visit from house to house and
share music. Some did
become famous, such as the Stoneman Family who recorded “The Ship That
Didn’t Return/The Titanic” and Henry Whitter who recorded “The
Wreck of Old 97” but that was never the focus. The
songs they played and created accompanied a whole generation through the
Great Depression, World War II, and into the vigorous growth of the 50s
and 60s. More recently Wayne Henderson and others have achieved
international recognition for their playing and carrying on the
traditions of “old time” music in their performances and in the
instruments they construct.
All of these musicians influenced the birth, growth and
continued development of the Galax Fiddlers Convention that is known
throughout the world by old-time mountain music fans.
